Second last match of the season last night. We lost 1-0. Next season I'm back at my
old position and cannot wait.
I figured out why my knee had been swelling yesterday evening, even though I had a suspicion what the problem was.  I had been doing lunges and this caused the ligament to extend too much. A but too aggressive, as it was termed.  I figured it out by letting the swelling come down and trying a couple of exercises that were new. After isolating the lunges, it was obvious that was the exercise culprit. So I'll stay off those for now.

The ligament, in spite of how I have abused it of late is fine. No looseness, and in perfect order. I was examined before match time. This means that I can start to run around the end of December, and although it is not in a state where I can put good pressure on it. I can continue on an exercise regimen that will help over the longer term. The big worry of loosening the ligament is passed due to what I had been doing.

However, I am completely frustrated at not being able to play ball or to run. Of some consolation, (not much), I was told yesterday that Tiger Woods is barely able to look at a golf club at this point after his surgery, which was a couple months earlier than mine.  Not being a golfer at all, this makes no difference to me, but in fact points out the fact that in terms of our bodies ability to repair, there are no real differences even if you're an elite athlete or have all the money on the planet.  That's more consolation, at least to me.

Recovery has been going well but a couple of days ago I tweeked the knee.
I was fixing the brakes on a car and put my leg in an awkward position and must have
tweeked it then. I did not notice it at the time since there was no pain, but the next day
the knee was swollen.  Not badly but enough to make a difference and the "full" sensation
on the back side of the knee.
It's been about there days now and it is slowly coming back to were it's been.
I was initially worries that I had stretched  the ligament, but less concerned now
as the swelling I take as the body reacting to heal the area in questions, which means that
it is integrating itself into my body. Still, I'm going rather slowly now, been off the bike and off the treadmill until this quiet down. The remainder of exercises are still being performed.

4 weeks after

The knee now looks almost normal. Just a couple of swollen spots where the instruments went in.  It is also working fine, as far as I can tell, but there is a little click on the upper portion of the right side. Really not sure to what this is due. It could be as a result of the swelling and the cut on the meniscus that they took out. I'll find out the next time I go.

I was yelled at last week at the match to put my brace on. OK. I've had it on since. Not fun, but realized that the brace is suppose to be on for 4 - 6 weeks. Not sure why though. I do wish that the doctors would explain more about the mechanics of the healing process. This would be a background on the "why" and permit one to take liberties as you feel fit, if experienced. Generally doctors only tell you what to do. Perhaps this is because 1. they have little time to explain. 2. Most people don't care about the explanations and just do what they say. 3. If they explain it to curious people like me, it's likely they may take too may liberties and screw themselves up.

Whatever the case, if I screw myself up because of lack of information, I consider it worse than having had it and done it purposefully.

Working out is going ok. I was apparently doing too much biking, 45 minutes. I was yelled at again for this. The idea is to do basically nothing for 6 weeks. Impossible for me. So I cut it back to 20 mins.  Weights are doing well.  Lots of core and a upper body. I know that I am also stretching the ligament from time to time, but with any luck, I'm not doing any damage.

2 more months before I can run in a straight line. I can't wait. I may explode before.

it'sgoing to be OK

Wednesday I went to the doctor to see about the knee. My expectation was to hear, "fantastic, I've never seen a recovery like this, you'll be on the pitch much earlier than I expected. Even perhaps in two weeks!" Well, this wasn't going to happen. The body heals in it's own time and the difference from one body to the next is very slight.
The good part of the visit was that things are progressing nicely and I am ahead of schedule for the time from surgery. This was consolation enough. The problem as I understand it after the explanation of procedure is that the bone needs time to integrate the ligament and heal from the drilling that was done to it.  Looking at engineering principles, the hole is a stress riser in the knee. Not a good thing if there is impact anywhere near it, as microfractures can certainly develop from these impacts.

Some the meniscus was also unrepairable so that was snipped off and the underside of the tibia was also smoothed as there was wear and it was a little rough.  I was cleared to go on the stationary bike, which I did later that day for 1/2 hour.  Since that time, I'm on at least 1 hour per day and it causes the knee to flex which I think should be good.

The ligament is a little tight still to I continue to have to stretch it out daily numerous time per day by doubling the knee and extending it. Weights, of course.

The program at this point is:  next visit in 4 weeks, during that time, bike stretching, no impact at all no ball kicking, nothing. After the 6th week, I can get into the pool. At 3 months, I can start to run in a straight line. I'm not thinking any further than that point. In the meantime, it's back to he stationary bike and my weights.

12 days post surgery

It's 12 days since surgery. The knee is working pretty well and although I continue to walk with a limp, I'm have not use the brace in 4 or 5 days now. The leg in general is strong and I've had no problems other than the ability to flex completely.  I can get my heel past the top of theknee of the other leg without any discomfort. It seems to be working very well, but this is only my estimation. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the surgeon to review progress. I am curious if what I'm experiencing is normal now or not.

Muscle definition has returned except for the area around the knee.  There is a sensation that accompanies any knee injury that I have experienced which is the fullness in the knee joint due to the liquid buildup there. If feels as if, if the liquid was gone I would be ready to play, but knowing better, I'll take it at the pace that I should even though I would like to obviously go faster.

Upon complete extension of the leg, I still do feel a little tug in the knee. I suppose this is due to the ligament needing to stretch to its proper length yet, and/or the internal fluid preventing this from happening comfortably. At any rate, other than that, the limp and inability for full contraction, the knee feels normal with no pain. I'll find out tomorrow what the doc says.

Getting better fast.

I could be that the techniques have evolved. I could be that my memories of the last ACL reconstruction as worse than they should have been, but the recuperation seems like a walk in the park. Not a big deal, I think, so far. Over the last couple of days, I've regained a  good amount of flexibility in the joint, and feel comfortable walking, with a limp, anywhere. On the stationary bike today to test where the knee is vs. two days ago, and the leg can go around the loop with little problem or discomfort.  The swelling has reduced further and today I can see muscle definition in the thigh area as I flex the quadricep. The knee itself is still swollen, and the fluid is still build up over the sides of the knee, but it's coming down rapidly. Taking Motrin twice a day, 3 tabs helps this plus the refrigeration by cold pack, I'm positive helps.

When the knee is flexed over the last day or so, if feels as if the ligament is stretching out little by little. I can feel this doing the exercises prescribed. When the knee is double, I can reach just above the other knee when the other  leg is laying flat. As I extend I can feel the ligament wanting to resist, but after a number of stretches, this ceases and becomes comfortable. This is now getting easier and less stressful on the ligament apparently and it does seem like the motion is becoming more normal. A very good sign, I think for this point in time.

Have returned to the weight regimen for the upper body. In terms of psychological state, that helps a lot. I do few exercises with the legs, as I think it's proper to remains cautious about this for the time being. Mostly arms, and core at this time.  The cardio vascular end is suffering, but with good luck I'll resolve this with the stationary bike when allowed to do so.  The next appt is on Wednesday next.  Between now and then, the prescribed exercises, proper diet so as not to put on unnecessary weight and continue with upper body work.

As far as getting around, inside the house, I'm not using the brace for the most part. I'm reserving the brace for outside the house as nothing is predictable there.

Tuesday, 23 Sept. Swelling is down significantly.
I think that the post I put up yesterday did not make it somehow. Oh well.
The knee itself is still swollen but compared to Sunday and even yesterday, I can
sense more flexibility and less fluid inside the knee. The exercises prescribed are being done at a higher rate that those suggested and for the moment am getting around  rather well and developing more confidence.  It recalls the numerous knee injuries that I have had in the past, as far as the swelling and the time taken for the swelling to come down. In this respect, it feels like any other knee injury, however, I do know that this is different.

This is a picture of the knee as it is yesterday. Four holes. The promised three, so I'll have to ask what the fourth one is.

As far as mobility, the two end points of extension and contraction are the areas where there is the most sensitivity. I'm able to double the leg to about 85% now and I suppose, due the swelling, it will not let me go further. On the other end, total extension is less problematic. However, at the full extension, I can feel the stretch quite noticeably. Going up stairs is not a problem, going down, I do have to steady myself and the leg will not quite give the security of movement that I need. Walking around the house, about 85% right now.

Drove to get supplies yesterday. No problem driving. Getting out of the car, just a little as the brace was on.

In general, not too bad in my opinion for the progress so far. The problem as noted before will be recovering cardio-vascular conditioning and muscle mass.
